Real people don't truly behave like that.
People who are surprised by what happens aren't paying attention, or the writing is so poor that the writer didn't put any foreshadowing in. which the best don't any way for great writers its subconscious.

She is a brainwashed Mormon freak who got lucky from a business decision from Little, Brown (who was going bankrupt at the time). Borders is going under (and I'm not surprised), and it shocked me to see how fat she is. Now she's trying to go "goth" and fly in the face of her crazed Mormon culture saying, "I'm normal!
