Death Before Slavery is an analysis of the events that culminated in the 2005 resignation of Bolivian President Carlos Mesa. death before slavery is the last sentence in the Bolivian National anthem. It was often chanted by the thousands of demonstrators who paralyzed Bolivia in May of 2005. The documentary offers a perspective not present in the mainstream media. It offers its view directly from the people of Bolivia through interviews with grassroots leaders, local journalists, congressional advisers, politicians, and average Bolivian citizens.

  • By capturing the voices of everyday Bolivians as well as those involved in grassroots movements, Death Before Slavery provides a window into an authentic democracy in action. And the keen understanding of international politics and economics as articulated in these interviews makes clear that this popular movement is rooted in both local and global knowledge.

  • I thought it made its points very strongly, with excellent images and interviews. It is very timely and fills a real gap, with Bolivia entering center stage just now and with very little out there on it. And it focuses in clearly and convincingly on the issue of control of natural resources, and explains it very accessibly.

  • "Death before Slavery" brings to life, in vivid focus, the current situation in Bolivia, with the rising indigenous opposition to foreign corporations that exploit resources and leave the local populations chronically impoverished. Take this documentary and share it."
