On November 16th, 1700 in Scotland, John MacPherson was convicted of being an "Egyptian" (Gypsy) and a "Freebooter" (Pirate). Both of these were hanging offenses. It is said that he was allowed to play his fiddle in which he composed his "rant" that then became famous by poets like Robert Burns as "MacPherson's Lament." Shaun-Patrick O. Young of the Keltic Dead Music plays this tune upon a Hohner, Low D, diatonic harp.
