As usual, another great clawhammer video, buddy! And wadejt1975, go for it, man, never, ever give up, if you keep on tying, you will get there, as I'm on the same boat myself, but the journey is fun and the destination is wonderful. Imagine yourself a few years from now, sitting on the front porch, drawing attention of bystanders while you play an awesome, enchanting clawhammer song, huh? That should motivate you a bit right here if you need help! So get the banjo and get started, hoss!

That is fantastic! I am about to attempt clawhammer banjo myself after only being a guitar/piano player for the last 20 years. What do you recommend I get for a first clawhammer style banjo?

That sounds so wonderful. I am about to take up clawhammer myself. I have never played banjo. I play guitar and have for about 20 years. But never banjo.
what is the advantage of a clawhammer? I am bidding on a clawhammer banjo in which the first 5 frets are there but the rest is fretless and i wonder if this is a mistake. Should I consider cancelling my bid and bidding on a fretless?

"Clawhammer" is a right hand technique, and can be done on pretty much any instrument.
I would not want a banjo fretted only to the 5th, as that is the area where lack of frets can be overcome fairly easily, while higher notes can be much harder to play in tune. This is why banjos such as the one demoed here are made the way they are. Fretless banjos are rarely played above the 5th or 7th frets.
Thus, unless you have a very specific reason, I would advise you to just get a fretless.

Thanks! You can learn on any (5-string) banjo. Most clawhammereurs prefer open backs, but it's not necessary. We recommend the Deering Goodtime in our shop, not only for their good sound, but because they have the feel and playability of a high-end instrument.
Nonetheless, there are many good instruments available. Give our shop a call: toll free 919-866-5189 and we'll be happy to point you in the right direction!
