(...continued from part one)
People dont tell you, and your parents dont warn you, that there really are two types of falling. Theres the falling when youre thirteen, when things are easy because youre young and the only thing you have to worry about is playing a rock show and seeing your girl. Then theres the falling as an adult. Similar to a car accident, it hurts like hell as you found yourself jolted all around with no time to think. Nick couldnt look away, even as he saw himself sitting in the drivers seat.
In a split second, he heard tires on gravel, contrasting the screeching noise in his dreams. Outside of his reverie, it was just an empty parking lot, with that simple childrens playground behind it. In it, Miley was driving her maroon SUV into a parking spot, one exactly three spots away from Nicks Mustang. Inside, he saw those beautiful lips curve to form words as Abby and Jake found their way out of the vehicle and toward their dad. On their backs, they both had their backpacks and duffel bags filled with clothing and toiletries. At the bottom of each bag, beneath the pajamas and the math homework, were memories that also traveled back and forth from house to house.
"Hey kiddo"
"Dadddddd" Abby whined. "Im thirteen"
"I know that Abbs-"
"Then the nickname-?" She initiated. "Im not four anymore" Nick also knew this. It was something he was reminded of every time he saw her and her face seemed to change more and more into her mothers, every other weekend.
"Jake!" Nick high-fived his son, smiling at Jacobs ability to realize that his dad was trying. Soon, hed be just like Abby and these moments would become few and far between. Sighing at the thought, Nick shut the car door. Abby immediately changed the radio station as Jake slipped his iPod earbuds in.
Three parking spots over, Miley was grabbing Jakes basketball from the back of the trunk. A small piece of skin between her jeans and her sweatshirt appeared, causing Nick to smile. He wasnt hers anymore, but every other weekend, in moments like this, he was allowed to pretend.
"Abby needs to take her cold medicine before bed, and Jake needs to be reminded to brush his teeth. Oh! and please dont forget about their allergies! Abby cant have peanuts and strawberries make Jake-"
"Break out...I know" Nick forced the words out of his mouth with a smile.
"Here" Miley handed Nick the basketball. Nick dropped the basketball. And time froze, in pieces similar to the framed pictures that adorned both their walls at home. Miley thought of their first date, the sold out concerts, and the nights of pure bliss. Nick thought of the bike rides, the presents, and the days off spent in bed. And then for awhile, neither of them were thinking. They tried. Maybe there was nothing left to do.
~!~
The situation wasnt black and white. It wasnt just something that you figured out overnight or let yourself sleep on to forget until the morning. With stubborn minds and heavy hearts, Miley and Nick let it settle, as they too followed in suit. It would be so easy for both of them to just give in and find their way back, but Miley and Nick never had the tenacity to take the easy way out. They didnt even have the heart to find the easy way; to them it was long gone and forever forgotten.
Miley picked up the basketball, glancing quickly to Abby and Jake who were now watching from inside the car. She breathed in, as if handing this ball off was somehow similar to placing a lock on the door they both had closed nearly five years ago. "Ill see you next week?"
She began to walk off but soon stopped. "Miley, wait!" He grabbed her arm and gently pulled her body to his. There it was, his racing heart and her quickened breaths. Still, Miley let go, in a way that she had never wanted to. Nick sighed, letting her hand fall to her side as he looked away. Falling for forever was a big mistake.

So beautiful written as usual. You are so good at writing these two no matter the situation. I always get drawn into your stories and feel for them. You're an incredible writer.
Ps, this song is amazing and makes me sad everytime. The feeling is only intensified by the fact the first time I heard it was in the music video with "Van and Cheyenne". Which made it that much sadder.
Anyways, amazing job as per usual. Good luck in the contest! =D

OMG YESSS!!! The music video makes it seem like they divorced and it makes sense because when the series ended they had a girl (the older of the two children in the car is a girl) and then went on to have a boy and then got divorced. Ahhh! So heartwrenching! I cried watching it for the first time! Those two have so much chemistry together!
