SHIOGAMA in JAPAN (Tourist information) 塩竈

Shiogama's real history began with the construction of the Jinja to mark its role as State port of nearby Tagajo Castle. However, the name of the city is derived from an ancient salt making ritual unique to the area("shio"=salt, "gama"=cauldron).
Apart from its natural beauty, Shiogama harbor has traditionally been the source of livelihood for the city and its residents.

塩竈市は宮城県のほぼ中央、仙台市と松島との中間に位置する。
「奥州一の宮鹽竈神社」の門前町として、また日本有数の港町として発展した。生マグロ水揚げ日本一を誇り、港町独特の食文化がつくられている。また、笹かまぼこ、揚げかま­ぼこなどの水産練り製品などの生産も日本一である。
