Here's a quick sample of one of the tools used in creating some of my work. The machine can burn or cut designs with precision to 1/1000ths of an inch on leather, wood, papers, cloth, acrylics, and certain kinds of metals or through them as fine filigree cutting.
As you can see the actual burning process is rather quick. What takes time is creating the files that go into the system and, on special pieces like this, setting up the material so that it burns only what you want it to burn. Masking off areas can help but you run the risk of messing up hours of work should the mask get nudged in the burn process. You need to be really careful if you're working with tight margins like I sometimes do.
