Actually there were much more German fighters that have been shot down by American or English bombers or long-range fighters than vice versa. Since 1943 the German air defense was kind of helpless; not enough fighters against thousands of heavy-armed bombers and the P51 Mustang was superior to the German fighters (except the Me262, which came too late to turn the tables). Since 1943 beeing a German fighter pilot was kind of a suicide mission, but had to be done to protect German civilians.
