Hello! I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI Headline Update on this Wednesday, September 12, 2007.

President Bush plans to tell the nation on Thursday that he plans to reduce the American troops in Iraq by as many as 30 thousand. That cut will reportedly happen by next summer. Bush will make this announcement on TV in a 15-minute address. He'll also endorse the recommendations of his top general, David Petraeus, and top diplomat in Iraq, Ryan Crocker. Petraeus and Crocker have testified before Congress this week regarding the situation in Iraq.

Many around the country paused yesterday to remember those who lost their lives six years earlier in the 9-11 attacks. Ceremonies took place at the World Trade Center in New York, at the Pentagon in Washington, DC and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania where one of the highjacked planes crashed. Friends and family members of victims participated in the events, holding photos of loved ones. Some also left flowers in rememberence at a reflecting pool at the base of the World Trade Center.

A new poll out shows Republican Presidential Candidate Fred Thompson in a statistical dead heat with Republican rival candidate Rudy Guiliani. That's according to CNN research. The former New York mayor garners 28 percent nationally among registered Republicans while the former Tennessee senator is one point behind at 27 percent. That's well within the poll's 5 percentage point margin of error. Analysts say Thompson has the edge among evangelical Republicans and especially among his fellow southerners.

A Minnesota court is granting Idaho Senator Larry Craig a hearing on his request to retract his guilty plea. The hearing is scheduled for September 26. That's just days before the September 30 deadline the Idaho Republican set for himself to resign if his name is not cleared. Craig was arrested in June in a men's room sex sting at the Minneapolis airport.
