The Windheok High Court will continue hearing the case of three HIV-positive women who were allegedly subjected to sterilization without their consent at public hospitals in Namibia on 18 January. The women are suing the Government of Namibia for violations to their constitutional rights to dignity; freedom from cruel and inhuman and degrading treatment; freedom from discrimination; and found a family. The three women at the heart of the case represent a small percentage of HIV-positive women who have claimed they were subjected to coerced sterilization in Namibia. At least fifteen other cases have been documented. From anecdotal evidence, the practice appears to be widespread throughout Namibia. SALC, is working with the Namibian Women's Health Network and the Legal Assistance Centre, on the case.
