If I may humbly state some things I do in almost 20 years of breaking wood, stone and plastic boards:
1. I found a great teacher of the martial arts.
2. I worked my way from easy to difficult slowly and I am careful
3. I always aim PAST the target so that I get enough "follow through"
4. I train almost daily with knuckle push ups and palm push ups.
5. I learned some Tai Chi to acquire focus and relaxation.
6. During the strike motion, I stay relaxed until the last millisec before impact.
