There are a lot of covers out there of this one, rightfully so, as it's a really great song by an inimitable artist. Post is still my favorite of her work, and this song is probably the closest she came to a "hit." Trying to figure out what to do with it, I decided there were a lot of people out there doing acoustic versions of it, that to do so would be redundant. At the same time, trying to match the wizardry of the studio version would be impossible for me, so I tried to meet both in the middle. A fun song to work on, and deceptively easy - the phrasing is somewhat difficult, as she is a unique singer. Hope you enjoy, and thanks for listening.
Lyrics:
We live on a mountain
Right at the top
There's a beautiful view
From the top of the mountain
Every morning I walk towards the edge
And throw little things off
Like:
Car parts, bottles and cutlery
Or whatever I find lying around
It's become a habit
A way
To start the day
I go through all this
Before you wake up
So I can feel happier
To be safe up here with you
It's early morning
No one is awake
I'm back at my cliff
Still throwing things off
I listen to the sounds they make
On their way down
I follow with my eyes 'til they crash
Imagine what my body would sound like
Slamming against those rocks
When it lands
Will my eyes
Be closed or open?
I go through all this
Before you wake up
So I can feel happier
To be safe up here with you
