I ran across an article that makes some similar points to yours. It seems Youtube won't let me post a direct link, but if you Google "jonathan coulton megaupload" you'll find it.

I'm a fan of Julia Nunes (rhymes with "tunes"), a singer/songwriter who's a bona-fide Youtube celebrity -- that is to say, she has a Wikipedia page, five albums on Amazon, more subscribers to her channel than U2, and was Conan O'Brien's musical guest on Tuesday. Here's the thing: she got her start doing covers on Youtube. If those videos had been removed because she didn't pay royalties, she might never have attracted the fanbase that allowed her to successfully produce her own music.

@OriginalCollabs see Wayne's World product placement, that's kinda what I'm talking about...not that its a solution, just that is how it used to be done even on tv in the way old days.

@rendereduselesspro Maybe it's the language barrier but, I don't think I really understand your point Rob. It doesn't matter if it's a service or a product, ads everywhere suck balls. Thinking that "most of the people" will contribute by paying an artist just to support him or her while they can have access to the person's work for free is not well knowing humanity. A few people will, but not always. I bought swag from Krumbine by example but, how many CDs do I have only in illegal mp3?

Wisdom should be free to create and share and yes I agree "wisdom" wants to be free, but it isnt just tagged to christian theology its tagged to humanity. Great message Captain Holy Pants.

@OriginalCollabs Remember...well, we won't cuz even WE aren't old enough, but commercials used to be nothing more than product placement?
(continued) Yet she's not just riding on other people's coattails -- if you watch the videos, the creativity that *she* put into them is undeniable. It's what elevated her above the thousands of other college students singing covers on Youtube. The point is, some of the best stuff out there was done by people putting their own creative spin on someone else's work. It would be a great shame if that were squelched.

@Torvik40 I agree entirely. Thanks for the post!

I'm ok with this only as long as you offer it. If an artist stop publishing his work and is asked to keep on going, then that becomes a request for a service. Another way of getting paid is advertise. Do we really want everything to be free but with tons of ads?

@OriginalCollabs Your last point is where I struggle, too. I just don't know...We need to make a living. Yes. And maybe the new paradigm is adspace...But can you imagine an Exxon sticker on your favorite musician's guitar? At some point it's disingenuous. Are people supporting the musician or the corporation that sponsors them? Is it really so difficult to imagine giving money to an artist? Supporting an artist?
