I have always used Avira AntiVir Free.... It has never let me down. I would also like to suggest Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

In the removal test of av-comparatives, AVG placed in Advanced (2 stars).
Please test Microsoft Security Essentials and Panda Cloud Antivirus (them both are free AVs).

lol yeah, I might consider removing AVG on my family's computer and installing Avast for it's protection, but I'm not sure that it's such a good idea since they're not really tech savvy :P
