Chicago cop fatally shoots teen on Southwest Side

A Chicago police officer shot and killed an armed teen who confronted him Sunday night on the grounds of a Chicago Housing Authority complex on the Southwest Side, police said early Monday.

The teen was identified by his family as Marcus Landrum, 18, who would have turned 19 on Monday.

The shooting occurred about 10:10 p.m. in the 4900 block of West 45th Street, outside the LeClaire Courts homes in the Garfield Ridge community.

Police responded to a burglary call at a residence about a block from the housing complex and were given descriptions of three male suspects, all of whom were seen riding bicycles, police said.

A short time later, about a block from the burglary call, police spotted three males on bicycles, all of whom wore clothing matching the descriptions of the suspects'. Officers detained two of the bicyclists, boys ages 12 and 16, but the third suspect, Landrum, got off his bike and ran from officers in pursuit, police said.

When an officer approached him in the housing complex, the officer "discharged his weapon when he was confronted by [the] armed offender," police said, adding that a gun was found at the scene.

Police said the teen was pronounced dead shortly before 11 p.m. at Mt. Sinai Hospital.

Police said the 16-year-old and 12-year-old boys were not armed, and neither was arrested because there was no break-in. The boys and Landrum were only thought to be in the back yard of the residence, police said. The residence was not burglarized, police said.

Police said additional officers responded to the scene of the shooting to quell a mob of people in the area who angrily confronted police.

The Independent Police Review Authority, which probes shootings involving Chicago police officers, continued to investigate the circumstances of the shooting Monday morning, said spokesman Mark Payne.
