A great horned owl hangs near her nest and two owlets along the Hackensack River in Bergen Cunty.

  • I think it was because it was broad daylight. My impression is she can nail a squirrel any time she feels like. There were plenty roaming around.

  • 'm being too glib here -- a Barred Owl that hunts in daylight by is definition not making a good living -- he's having to work overtime.

    BTW, BBB, nice clip.

  • The squirrel's in its element, and the owl and the squirrel both know it. The squirrel would dance around on the branches and the owl would waste energy or break a wing. Now, if the squirrel were out in the open, the owl would have the advantage. Barred Owls, when hunting in daylight, make a good living perched over bird feeders, which are typically out in the open, and which draw squirrels to the spilled seed.

  • Why didn't the mom eviscerate the squirrel and feed it to the chicks? They could certainly use the nourishment.
