The terms Latino and Hispanic were agreed upon by MALDEF, the League of United Latin American Citizens and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, at the founding of Maldef in 1968. They were officially recognized and first used by the U.S. Gov't in the 1970 census. That action helped millions of Hispanics and Latinos gain representation in deciding Federal dollars spent.
