Have you performed reel servo align? This machine is all software controlled digital servo with align done via menu's. There is no t/u tension sensor as I remember....simulated via software. Biggest problem with Sony's was motor bearings....nothing else ever failed!

Hi again;
Had this on one of my 3100's - believe it or not it was the pinch roller not disengaging fully due to seizure of the actuating linkage. I had also had a lot of trouble with stable capstan locking which was caused by partial seizure of the pinch roller bearings. This may help you...

Put my thinking cap on - I suspect the fault may lie on on the system or servo boards (1 or 2) in the lower half of the machine however before going down that road reseat them and then reseat all the connectors on the MDA (motor drive amplifier) board in the back of the machine. One of my machines did a similar thing to this and it was a connector problem. I'm assuming you have the manual for the machine and know how to get to the various test modes - let me know if you hav'nt.

Another thing, the right hand reel table might be slightly deformed which causes it to rub against the face of the machine and seize up during turning. Check it by turning both left and right reel tables without a tape loaded, and if that right one feels a little harder than the left one, you'll have to open the machine up and push it back a little. Very gently though, don't force it.

At first I thought you were having the dreaded sticky-shed syndrome problem after watching this but then I thought it's probably the brakes on that machine needing to be checked out. I saw this same problem a while ago with a Revox B77 1/4" audio tape open reel deck. Look for any signs of oxide shedding first over the guides and heads (particularly the guides) and if all okay, then pin it down to a braking problem.

If changing reels to something else (different brand, vintage, etc) eliminates the problem, you've likely isolated the problem to that one tape.

In watching the rewind, the supply reel seems to stutter, as though the tape was sticking somewhere in the tape path... and that causes the system to go into stop.
Are you using the same reel of videotape on both machines?
What happens when you try a different reel of tape on either/both machines?
Clean the tape path first, so if there's a problem with Tape A, you don't contaminate Tape B.

The problem is that the backing of the tape you are using has become sticky and is binding with the entrance/exit guides on the head drum. These will need throughly cleaning which is easy on these machines as they open right up when the tape in unlaced. The machine is doing what it's doing to protect the tape.

actually its not that as the tapes i was using were fine, and all are doing this, there is no problem when the speed is 2x rewind or playback but anything faster causes the problem...if it were the sticky tape problem, it wouldnt work in any mode
