Intro to Salsa: Basic Step & Variations On1

In this lesson you will learn the basic step in Salsa, danced on1, as well as a few variations. In the basic step, the follower steps back with the right foot on the first beat of the measure while the leader steps forward with the left foot.
In the sidebreak, the follower takes a step to the right with her right foot while the leader will take a step to the left with his left foot.
Finally you will also learn the crossing sidebreaks, which is a variation of the regular sidebreak. In the crossing sidebreak, the follower crosses in front with her right foot, on beat 3 and with her left foot on beat 7.

A word about Salsa Dance Styles

L.A. style (On1) and New York style (On2) are two of the most popular Salsa dance styles around the world. In the L.A style, the leader breaks forward with his left foot on the first beat of the measure while the follower breaks back with her right foot. In the New York style, the follower breaks forward with her left foot on the second beat of the measure while the leader breaks back with his right foot.
