As a journalism student (though not in TV news, but I took an elective in it) I can tell you the idea sometimes is to get the best quote you can get. And rednecks give nice, long, sloppy quotes. It just rolls around on their tongue quite beautifully. Unfortunately, after they're done, they spit. We have to edit that out.
