Unfortunately I haven't worked with Blender for at least half a year, so I don't quite know my way around any more.
If I remember it right thought, you could try deleting every second vertex on the beams and then selecting two and pressing CTRL+F to join them with an edge. Then take the next two and so on. I don't think there was a way to actually un-subdivide. Maybe there was, but I can't remember, sorry.
