This is a project I undertook at University as one of my elective choices, in a module called 'Audio Visual Interfaces' .

I chose to create an electronic instrument that combined ideas of control from several existing devices; eg. Theremin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theremin), Wiimote (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_Remote), Continuum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continuum_%28instrument%29) and the Monome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monome).

These elements were all combined into a two part device with the aid of a Phidget Board and Phidget Sensors (http://www.phidgets.com). I also implemented a custom built Monome by using a 19 Key USB Keypad and rewiring the key contacts to 23 push-to-make switches, on both the USB Keypad and the Phidget Board itself. To learn how to do this, please go here:- (http://cycling74.com/2007/10/16/making-connections-building-a-usb-footswitch/). All the devices are USB and are all plugged into a 4-Port USB 2.0 Hub located inside the die-cast project box. I fitted a Neutrik USB Chassis Socket to the project box to eliminate multiple wires to connect up to be able to start using the device.

I then used a program called 'Max MSP' (http://cycling74.com/products/maxmspjitter) to control the USB Phidget Kit by creating a 'Patch' in the software tool.

For an example of an earlier working version of the patch I used to control this device, please go here:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQwCbLr6Vto

  • I'm amazed. Truly. That is one of the coolest things I've seen this year! I think it's got real potential and I'd love to see you adapting it to making a more diverse range of sounds and looping rhythms!! Where and when can I get one!?

  • @jonathanamazing

HAHA! If I get any better with Max MSP I will try and work in a broader range of sounds.

If it ever gets put into production, I'll be sure to let you have the first out that was manufactured! ;)

  • Forgot to add. Epic shirt

  • Thanks

  • What the heck! I've never been jealous of anyone in my life until now. lol dam this guys hella smart. What the hell! cool shit. =D

  • you've just revolutionize the theremin my friend!

  • Intersting concept to say the least!

I've applied to Leeds Met Music Tech but didnt get a chance to see the studios and music tech rooms, are they well equipt and generally good quality, and is the course decent? Many thanks

  • @Cappi666 Innovative, but if you want to quickly and easily add sound pallets, then why not allow your instrument to output MIDI as an additional alternative to generating it's own sound? It strikes me that it would be a really fluid MIDI controller for interesting percussive (rythmic) work.

  • hey! nice project... Also very nice you spent some energy explaining how it works. Greatings from Bilbao

  • do you use this in a band yet?

that would be sick if you were to make a band and play this over some kickass industrial/ techno beats and throw in some guitars

    or pioneer a new genre
