Excerpts from both parent and teacher workshops by Nancy Bruski, LCSW of Wise Choice Guidance.

The workshop, "Help Your Child Build Inner Controls Without Losing Control Yourself" provides understanding of how young children learn impulse control as well as effective discipline strategies that do not focus primarily on consequences and punishment. It is a child's developmental job to test limits, to experiment with how much control he/she can have, and it is a parent's job to allow choices and exploration within clear boundaries so that children can feel safe. When parents plan ahead for challenging situations they can reduce the number of times they will need discipline interventions.

The workshop, "Fairness Re-Examined: How to Avoid Over-Reliance on Discipline Techniques" provides a framework for teachers to understand how to focus on the goals of discipline, such as self-control, self-esteem, strong social skills, and mutual respect in the classroom. Focusing on these goals rather on obeying rules per se will free them from focusing on consequences and punishment. Too often, teachers worry about treating children as individuals because they fear being unfair. Redefining fairness and intervening with children to resolve conflicts and solve problems rather than to enforce compliance primarily through consequences creates mutual respect and community in classrooms.
