West Geauga chews up Eastlake North in rout

Matt Florjancic / Special to The Plain Dealer, September 11, 2010 9:17 a.m.

CHESTER TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- West Geauga junior running back Joe Ziccardi scored on his second and fifth carries of the game, senior quarterback Joe Drenski ran for an 82-yard touchdown and threw a 53-yard touchdown in the third quarter, and the Wolverines routed visiting Eastlake North, 41-12.

"We ran the football, executed pretty well on offense," West Geauga coach Lou Cirino said. "Drenski had 121 [yards] passing, 121 [yards] rushing, so I'm happy with that. Overall, I think we played well, I really do. Defensively, in the second half, we shut them out. We made our adjustments and shut them out."

"West G's a real good football team," said North coach George Burich, in his fourth season leading the Rangers. "We just didn't come out here and take care of things -- defense, offense, special teams -- even our backups at the end didn't take care of things. It was a poor performance on our part and a great performance on West G's part."

The Rangers opened the second half with a 14-play drive that resulted in no points. The Wolverines took over at their own 10-yard line and three plays later Drenski ran around left tackle for the 82-yard score.

"That's how long it was? Wow," Drenski said. "I followed my fullback [Joe Pinto], he made an excellent block and I had to beat one man. It was great. I think that's a career long for me. My eyes opened up huge and I was like, 'I've got to beat this kid and then I'm off to the races.' "

The next time West G got the ball, Drenski found junior wide receiver Nick Cuthbert for the 53-yard touchdown.

The Wolverines took the opening kickoff and marched 61 yards in seven plays for a touchdown. Ziccardi ran through the middle for the 27-yard touchdown.

Eastlake North scored a touchdown on its second drive of the game, but the extra point failed and the Wolverines remained in front, 7-6.

West G added to its lead on the ensuing possession when Ziccardi took a pitch right and waved off a pair of tacklers before cutting back to the left side of the field and scoring from 21 yards.

Following a bad snap on a punt, the Wolverines took possession at North's 19-yard line. Four plays and one defensive pass interference penalty later, Drenski connected with senior wide receiver Mitch Kusa for a 6-yard touchdown.

Drenski made it a three-score game when he went in from 2 yards out late in the first half."
