Author Thomas Sowell argues that public demand for intellectuals is largely manufactured by intellectuals themselves. He says intellectuals make alarming predictions using causes like global warming to create a need for their services.

Thomas Sowell introduces his new book Intellectuals and Society and expounds on what he calls "the fatal misstep of intellectuals" -- the assumption that superior ability within a particular realm can be generalized as superior wisdom or morality over all. He offers examples of this misstep in areas as divergent as economics, the environment, and national defense.

Finally, he warns us to resist the influence of intellectuals and points out that the demand for public intellectuals is largely manufactured by the public intellectuals themselves. - Hoover Institution

Thomas Sowell is an American economist, political writer, and commentator. He is currently a senior fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. In 1990, he won the Francis Boyer Award, presented by the American Enterprise Institute. In 2002 he was awarded the National Humanities Medal for prolific scholarship melding history, economics, and political science.

Peter M. Robinson is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, where he writes about business and politics, edits Hoover's quarterly journal, the Hoover Digest, and hosts Hoover's television program, Uncommon Knowledge.

@AndroidPolitician carbon tax hasnt been implemented, but it is often discussed and the more people are told they are the problem and their money will somehow reverse global warming, the more likely it is to be put in place. its hard to believe what a climate scientist says when he doesnt get paid if there isnt an issue. either way, scientists say almost all of north america used to be covered in ice, obviously the temp. changed, no human emissions to cause that.

Global warming if it does exist is not catastrophic and the measures that we would need to take to curb its largely theoretical growth are never going to happen. I'm a person that doesnt sit there doing the modern day version of an Incan rain dance. like the people of that era who thought that the gyrations of the human body had an effect on the climate system, you listen to select scientists who tell you that its hot today because you run your car

@aussieconservative That's true, like creationists, they can't actually prove scientifically anything they say, so they try to redefine science.

This is why you should only be allowed into university if you can get a good A level or equivalent in maths. That, at a stroke would get rid of all the humanities, social science, and liberal arts faculties.

but, and this is the crucial bit, most of the worlds scientists don't think that global warming is man made. That's because they're scientists. If it's got an "ology" on the end (with the exception of biology), it's a charlatan's creed. Lets see shall me, psychologist, sociologist, climatologist, do these all have a similar Marxists smell, the Left Wing Dream factory of public universities. If you could do real science you'd be a physicist.

@AndroidPolitician plus using Occam's Razor, which is a tool of Philosophy (no doubt that a marxist such as yourself spends a lot of time embroiled in philosophy indeed you would gear our entire economic systems around it), to answer a question of science is just dumb. By that rationale the world is flat. using Occam's Razor you would have told Galileo and the Heliocentric's to go home because you already have 'consensus'.
