It's not even a gay movie, but it isn't a "straight" romance either.

It is brilliant though, and for a 23 yo kid to make this, it is phenomenal.

Homosexuality has been observed in more than 1 500 species. Homophobia in only one. Now which is unnatural?

Yes, she's a girl who was once a guy. Who still loves this girl. Girls can love other girls. Who this person was, never changed inside. Who she loves, who she cares for. Her passions, dreams... they're all still real. They just existed in a shell of something that wasn't real for her. They should have been solid and true for her, but they weren't, because they were mired by falseness. Now that she's what she wants to be, she wants her to be near her... but not everyone gets what they want.

Her nickname, Fred, is short for Frédérique. Have you ever seen the TV series "Angel" made by Joss Whedon? There's a fictional female character on the show whose name is also Fred, though in her case it's a nickname that's short for Winifred.

The ending scene takes the audience back to 1987 when the couple first met.

no, what I'm saying is that if this individual issue about self esteem etc, combined with such good directions, scripts, cinematography, then I say, if more important issues were put into this context then we will get more goosebumps. I'm saying that teenage american with self-esteem issue who can't get a date to a prom, or being bullied because he's gay is just on the same level as the issue in this film. But the French puts more cinematic value to it. I said, I got goosebumps, means it's good!

So you're saying all films should be about poverty and until poverty is eradicated then we shouldn't make any other films with a different subject?

I got goosebumps. (meaning it was good) but I think film that bring issues like this are just quite selfish. don't get me wrong, but the question of 'what is the meaning of life?' 'what is true happiness?' is actually just a matter of perspective. I mean, we all have issues, but some more important issue should be given more attention. like poverty or kids struggling to earn a living instead of going to school. well it is a good trailer btw.

I saw this at the Cannes festival, it was beautiful. But sadly most people fell asleep because it was too long!
