A east bound CN freight leaves Foleyet Ontario on September 20, 1995 with a SD40-2 leading a MLW HR616. The sound battle starts, and goes back and forth with the two. EMD sounds great, but I perfer the sound of that ALCO prime-mover best. But that's only my opinion, since I'm and Alcoholic... Just some info on the HR-616. There was only 20 HR616 built. They where built in 1982, and retired early 1990's. The HR stood for high reliability, which they where not. Lots of electrical problems. The 616 was for 6 axles, 16 cylinder. Some where scraped, some went to NRE in Illinois. I can find nothing about them on their site. So who knows where they are now. Thanks for watching. Jackmp294.5...

  • what is MLW ??????

  • @TheSterlingLoopTroop MLW is Montreal Locomotive Works. They took over Alco, (American Locomotive Company) when Alco quit building locomotives in the USA...

  • nice battle ! I prefer ALCOs to EMDs anyday ! and In India ALCOs cannot be MUED to EMDs but in Canada it seems it can be done !

  • @avinashi07 Glad you enjoyed it. The ALCO's, GE's, and EMD's all where able to MU here in the states, and Canada. I am not sure that the Baldwin's and FM's where capable of mu'ing with anything other than their makes. Thanks for watching...

  • the ALCO sounds like the Hogwarts Express :D

  • @farmguy2400 ALCOs have smokey engines while EMDs emit very little fumes.

  • @DeserTBoB93535 The early GE's (Cooper-Bessemer) used Elliotts (as did Nordberg's, some Enterprises and Baldwins). The Alco's I've worked on used their own (Alco-GE) design dating from the 1940-50's after they went to water-cooled types on the 244's. But yes, they always had a lag problem, less so if they used expensive exhaust multi-pipe headers (8 on some 16-cyl. applications).

  • MLW! I love that chufff to it. That is also why i like all the GE standard cabs. The widecabs just plain old suck

  • Why the second one is smoking so much ? Can it be that the first one isn't pulling at all or very little

  • Very Nice! Great smoke show!

    Thank you!
