http://AviationExplorer.com - Trans World Airlines Flight 800 (TWA 800), a Boeing 747-131, exploded and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near East Moriches, New York, on July 17, 1996, 12 minutes after takeoff, killing all 230 persons on board. TWA 800 was a scheduled international passenger flight from New York to Rome, with a stopover in Paris.

While accident investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) traveled to the scene, arriving the following morning, there was much initial speculation that a terrorist attack was the cause of the crash. Consequently, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) initiated a parallel criminal investigation. Sixteen months later the FBI announced that no evidence had been found of a criminal act and closed its active investigation.

The four-year NTSB investigation concluded with the approval of the Aircraft Accident Report on August 23, 2000, ending the most extensive, complex, and costly air disaster investigation in United States history. The report's conclusion was that the probable cause of the accident was an explosion of flammable fuel/air vapors in a fuel tank, and, although it could not be determined with certainty, the most likely cause of the explosion was a short circuit. As a result of the investigation, new requirements were developed for aircraft to prevent future fuel tank explosions.

Many TWA Flight 800 alternative theories exist, the most prevalent being that a missile strike from a terrorist or U.S. Navy vessel caused the crash, and is the subject of a government coverup

  • so sad, over here on LI, I hated the dumb joke that followed, TWA : T hey'll W ash A shore. so ghay... my sister was also on that.

  • This was the saddest day I'd ever had. The vascular surgeon that saved my dad's life, and gave him an additional 15 years to live, died in this crash. He, his wife and children were on board for their first family vacation since he'd graduated from med school. His name was Dr. Guassan Harranie. He also had taken care of me one time for my legs, because of bad veins, and did a perfect surgery. The medical community suffered a great loss. We found out from his staff that they were on that flight

  • So the government is saying that what ALL of those 200+ witnesses saw was a HALLUCINATION? It's the government's fault that this case is screaming "conspiracy"!

  • @karmabongwadda There is no proof the military was involved. On the wreckage, no proof of gas-washing on the metal could be found, and all military missiles were accounted for. If this were a conspiracy, you can't keep this many people quiet for this long.

  • @jetfreak4 The military ATC tapes were confiscated never to be seen. The military maintains a compleletely independent air traffic control system and radar.

  • @cchris874 Agreed! There is a whole lot more to this incident than we'll ever know and I really have not been satisfied with the answers given. I have been in two many 747's on the tarmac in far hotter weather for one thing. This smells so badly of a cover up.

  • this is so lame

  • The real clincher for me is common sense: if you wanted to cover-up a missile and make people forget about the crash, would you

    1) Cite all the explosives positives (there were several initially), declare the accident a bomb, and be done with it.

    or

    2) Insist on dredging up every last piece of wreckage in the most expensive investigation ever, while the public waits in a state of mystery for 4 long years, after which you announce it really was just a little spark after all.

  • When I post my anti-missile comments, I find that the people responding to me usually give up rather quickly. Another fascinating fact: the FBI's chief metallurgist, William Tobin, confirms that what 800 CTists think is very nearly the opposite of reality: in fact, the FBI was DYING to declare the accident sabotage so they could take over the investigation. Kallstrom was on the verge of announcing "bomb." It's all in Tobin's sworn testimony !!! THAT's why they removed and tampered wreckage.

  • The Eastwind pilot also confirms that the fireball was a late stage event: his observations are time-stamped, and show that the main fireball that people saw exploding dropped to the ocean after about 10 seconds, indicating some 30-40 seconds went by after the initial start of the accident. This doesn't fit the missile theory. CTists are very bad at recognizing that you can often have two completely different theories that seem at first to fit the facts. This is what you had in F800, IMO.
