When I ask people to tell me why they love Amy's Place, the first thing out of their mouth is not so much a word but a noise (a' la Homer Simpson close to doughnuts). Sometimes there's no sound at all, just a slow exhale of breath as they look skyward as if to ask, "Why does one love the sun and the stars?" But when they collect themselves the answers are the kinds of things you would hope for if you ran a restaurant.

They will extoll the quality and variety of food served, especially the vegetarian choices. They swoon over the music and chill atmosphere, the local art on the walls that is always changing. They'll appreciate the family friendly crowd, but also the groups of college students in University Heights. They'll tell you that although the restaurant is usually packed, the service is friendly, accommodating and quick. It's apparent that picky eaters and greasy spoon devourers can find a home at this cult-famous diner.

Amy's Place might, a first glance, seem like a breakfast joint... and indeed it is (with an army of fans that argue it's the best in town). But, when you look closer at the menu, the variety of Middle Eastern and Lebanese influenced lunch and dinner dishes give this restaurant a style that is totally unique. And isn't that why we buy local? Sure, supporting a business owner who participates actively in the community and cares deeply about Buffalo is great, but the experience of buying local is usually one-of-a-kind. Local establishments like Amy's Place create the culture of this city by offering something different that you can't get anywhere else... I'll never say Buffalo is any better for having an Applebees, but I sure hope Amy's Place sticks around!
