With the amount of floating debris at sea - from planks of wood (like those lost from the deck of Sinegorsk) to shipping containers - the ability of a vessel to withstand impact is something worth considering - especially if you're the kind of sailor who doesn't assume right of rescue. The magic "mummy! mummy! get me outta here!" button found on things like EPIRBs doesn't do much for that mentality, but some sailors would rather have a boat they can get to port regardless of impact.
