For others who want to know what the last button is that he mentioned. It controls the flashes high speed sync abilities. Usually you can't fire a flash if you're shooting faster than 1/200sec. Pushing the button once will put the flash into high speed sync mode, which means you can shoot with shutter speeds up to 1/8000sec (so long as you are using it on cam, or via an advanced trigger/cable). Press it twice, and the flash fires just before the second curtain on your shutter shuts.

Thanks so much! I have had my 430ex for a couple years but could only use it through the camera. FINALLY I know how to control it manually!!!

Why do you say this can't be used as a master, that it can only be used as a slave? I'm told that when shooting natural light photography and using reflectors you can use this flash alone and don't even need "slave" flashes to accompany considering all the preset options in programs such as the Tiffen DFX series & the LightRoom versions?
