@DaBhaalspawn shotokan is all about speed and timing. these "slaps" release the tension in your muscles therefore your hand travels faster. that "slap" in the end becomes a fist. if you dont like it then dont train this style. end of discussion

@laylowtech that's because you probably have never seen a real karate combat, only tournaments. If killing was aloud in MMA, the oponent would fall not knowing what happened. It's just too f*cking fast.

Like every other sport Shotokan evolved. Today the peak is WKF and you can see that both on youtube or in a competition(where their standards are higher). These masters should be respected because they represent a certain period in shotokan. But one should also have respect for the "masters" that are active and competing right now, such as Aghayev, who is hardly matched in speed, takedowns, etc. All I'm saying- don't live in the past !

Neither would ever identify himself as a student of Abe. Maybe as a student of Asai, without question as a student of Nakayama sensei, but neither man would consider Abe sensei his teacher in any sense other than Abe is their senior. All three men were aligned with Asai sensei in the JKA split.
