1. New Views of the Skies: The Invention of the telescope has been by far the most revolutionary development in the history of astronomy. For thousands of years, astronomers had to rely on their eyes in unravelling the mysteries of the Universe. The telescope revealed an embarrassment of astronomical riches, and led to a dramatic increase of knowledge about the wider world we live in.

The "Eyes On The Skies" movie explores the many facets of the telescope - the historical development, the scientific importance, the technological breakthroughs, and also the people behind this ground-breaking invention, their triumphs and failures. It is presented by Dr. J, aka Dr. Joe Liske, a professional astronomer from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and host of the Hubblecast video podcast.

"Eyes On The Skies" is an official movie for the International Year of Astronomy 2009 and the International Astronomical Union, produced by ESA/Hubble (the same team as behind the widely distributed movie "Hubble - 15 Years of Discovery").

  • Good history! Are you the one who makes these videos, or do you post them from elsewhere?

  • This is an ESA/ESO movie. See credits in the description box.

  • really good vid educational stuff i like it!

  • excellent video. although I find it a little odd that there is more emphasis on William Herschel discovering Uranus than him discovering that our galaxy is flat. This and infrared radiation seem to dwarf the discovery of a planet in our solar system. All in all great works themselves. Thanks for posting this video.

pity though ive already watched it here.

  • awosme

  • superb. thank you so much for posting: I am so enjoying looking through your channel. I just wish documentaries broadcast on terrestrial tv were this well made: they are so content free in comparison: it can be done well (like this), to be informative, rivetting, inspiring.. but so rarely is, in our sound bite led "reality" "culture": dominated by "pseud" broadcasters who have lost the plot!

  • You know, given the intricacy of some of the paintings around at that time. I'm wondering why no one ever though to have professional artists do paintings of the stars. I mean they wouldn't have been 100% actuate. Probably a lot less, but I think they still could have captured the essence of the experience.

  • He is holding a green screen.
