Poor Women's Gyro Meat?
-
@kunjidee you're right a lot of people have the missconception that oregano is used in Gyro meat and i guess you can(use oregano), it's a matter of preference(some people use gound cumin also), but oregano is more commonly used in Döner kebab, in Shawarma they even use cinnamon, cardamom and i think nutmeg.
and not being Muslims, greeks prefer Gyro meat made with pork, i know i do!
-
@kikitoStamatis what about oregano???????!!!
-
@Mikenopolis LOL jerk...but good point.

I would use dehydrated onion and add water to it to reconstitute it. And I would only use a 1/8 cup too. I would get the butcher to twice grind both the beef and the lamb. If you can find some lamb fat to twice grind, that would improve it too. I would also add some unseasoned bread crumbs to the mix. I wouldn't use that Greek spice mix---use just the oregano, paprika and dash of cumin

the only thing "poor man's" about this is your seasonings(basic Gyro is marjoram, rosemary, garlic, salt, pepper and the meat of your choice) and if you use minced garlic out of a jar you probably deserve paying for expensive gyros.

does this taste like the real thing? i'm about to make this!!!!

GROSS! After she touched raw meat she never washed her hands, now all the jars have raw meat decay! She tells us to wash our hands, but it seems a bit too late....besides that thanks for the recipe! I love gyros too!

thank goodness for restaurant depot I buy a case of kronos gyro meat for 15bucks precooked and sliced

@frisco0909 It's looks like you pronounce it Jai-Row....but in Greek you pronounce it Yee-Row :D
They turned out ok, but need a lot more seasoning I think. I will most likely double the seasoning (including the salt) the next time.
