Alphonse, you are a genius musician yourself. Your playing in these performances is spectacular and very inspirational!

Simply put these uploads are priceless. Using the word "Thankful" seems appropriate.

what's amazing to me is how harmonically and melodically linked mangelsdoff and pastorius are -- they're so connected it almost doesn't sound "outside" at all. they quote each other's phrases varbatim before elaborating, and are almost always in the same scale. just brilliant work. and mouzon right there either supporting or underlining rhythmic ideas from their melodies.

@cottonfever1221 Maybe you should try getting together with some real good musicians and actually try playing stuff like this. Not as easy as you think (i.e. 6 year olds could not do this). If you've played drums and bass for 30 years and this sounds like 6 year olds to you it just makes you sound really limited as a musician. I've been playing drums for longer than 30 years and I like to think that I am constantly growing. Alphonse is a monster as is Jaco. Expand your horizons dude.

@intr1nzic >Point made< I am all for breaking the mold and charting new area's musically I guess this is just not my thing,I dont have to actually like a certain song or its players to understand and appreciate it for what it is and its difficulty. I am truly baffled by the notion that I cannot grasp whats being done musically,I pride myself in the ability to at least have it make sense SOMEHOW and see it for what its worth, but not this time I guess.

@cottonfever1221 - Also, this sort of 'out" improvisation is supposed to be challenging, both to the performer and the listener. I applaud artists brave enough to explore these areas and feelings, expressing sometimes a tumultuous cacophony or a whispered conversation. A bubbling brook or an avalanche. Laughter or the cries of millions of Africans who died in the middle passage. It takes a rare talent to express both the horror and the wonder of life, beyond a contrived notion of music.

@cottonfever1221 - Different strokes for different folks, however I think it IS a little disrespectful to equate this incredible improvisation to "a group of 6 year olds". As far as what you are missing, I would start with several albums from artists including but not limited to later John Coltrane, Pharaoh Sanders, Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler, Cecil Taylor, Charles Mingus, Eric Dolphy, etc to name a few, I'll give album names to anyone who is interested.

@cottonfever1221 It's not meant to be popular music; it's avant-guard music that sort of tests the limits of style and ability. And the three of 'em do great. Top names, all of 'em. Hey luckily no one says you have to love it.

@todds7 Help,First I have played drums and bass for 30 yrs not claiming I am the all knowing, but I dont hear anything even remotely groove orientated,I hear what sounds like a group of 6 year olds playing anything that comes to mind, nothing fits what the other is doing. No disrespect but what part of this music's appeal am I missing, this is'nt an attack or dig these guys are respected musicians and I love Jaco to death but.....

holy sack

I concur that both Albert Manglesdorff and Jaco Pastorius were geniuses and a pleasure for me to play with them! R.I.P. Jaco and I first recorded together (before this concert in Berlin, Germany) - when we recorded "LAND OF THE MIDNIGHT SUN with Return To Forever guitarist Al DiMeola in 1975 in New York City. There is an awesome drum solo right after Jaco's bass solo that's not here!!!!
