My "Jamil" whirlpool chiller in action. After the wort has cooled enough I'll remove the chiller and let it whirlpool for a few minutes, and then shut off the pump so let it settle out. Kudos to Jamil for popularizing this great design.

  • Have you tried "shooting" the the whirlpool irrigator around the walls of the tun instead of the centre section of the cooling exchanger?

  • @mavallarino Yep I've tried both and it doesn't make a big difference either way. It's only important that the liquid is moving around.

  • nice whirlpool. Do you find it really helps put sediment in the center? Are those resinated tin foil pipes floating around in the wort?

  • It gets the majority of sediment into a pile, the rest is spread in a thin layer. I have a false bottom so this filters it out anyway. The biggest benefit of the whirlpool is not to collect sediment but to speed the chilling time.

The stuff floating around is grated ginger root :-)

  • while the whirlpool draws the trub to the center of the kettle, the cigarette butts and carrot peels floating on top can be extracted using a common aquarium net.
