Lionel 2009 reproduction of thier 1936 291W Red Comet. The original Red Comet came in a number of minor variations, including an export version which I have, but it is in pretty rough condition so this reproduction was perfect, gives me a good runner. Been letting it run while I do the finishing touches to the Halloween layout being as it was a little tight and needs breaking in.

  • Steve, Beautiful set. I know that many collectors frown on reproductions, but this one makes sense. There are simply not enough of these sets to go around, certainly not in like new condition! You can bring this set to train night any time! Two thumbs up from Train Night at Dave's!

I actually have a "real one". It's a serious project set that I think was originally for the Euro market. Has the box coupler on the tender only and I think a 240V transformer. I had started collecting parts for it, but may now pass that project on to someone else.

  • Steve, what a gorgeous set! Would love to see more of it! - Ed

Ed, Im sure it will show up in other video's without the theme Halloween distraction.

  • Steve,

I opted for the same train. It's my only Lionel reissue and I am quite pleased with it.. There are just too many problems with the metal fatigue on the cab roof and cracked drive wheels on the older originals. Hey, did you notice your smokestack is mounted on backwards? Just like mine. LOL They were all made that way.

Chuck, that's why I zoomed in on the stack. I have not decided yet if I'm going to turn it around or leave it.

  • Its wierd how some collectors only run repro stuff and shelf all the old originals and pre war stuff. Then on the other hand others run only originals and dont want one repro part of any kind. This set does look great and I would not be sad if I had one. Looks great Steve and it looks to also run very well and you still get the old sound of an original with the old tin sets!!

  • Great set! My Lionel Corporation (MTH) streamlined set is only a year late and counting. These reproductions are the only way some of us can get these trains.

  • oooh ahh. Nice

  • Great train set. I see no problem with reproductions like these. They carry the same nostalgia as the old ones. Thanks for sharing.

  • has Lionel been reissuing older models for long?

  • @gigeastman Steve, I'm leaving my stack just the way they installed it. It makes me laugh. 99.9% of people will never know the difference anyway.

Yes, the cars are lighted, it just does not show in the video.
