Qu8k - BALLS 20 - Carmack Prize Attempt - High Altitude Rocket On-board Video

On September 30, 2011 at 11:08am, Derek Deville's Qu8k (pronounced "Quake") launched from the Black Rock Desert in Nevada to an altitude of 121,000' before returning safely to earth. Above 99% of the atmosphere the sky turns black in the middle of the day and the curvature of the earth is clearly visible.

That whistling sound above 100k ft was totally nuts!! Weird tho it almost sounded just like air at ground pressure whistling out into the near vacuum during the planned vent. Oh wait- don't solid fuel motors have solid oxidizer powder, like ammonium perchlorate, mixed rite in? And didn't the motor only burn for 8 seconds, with burnout at roughly 13,000 feet? Then qu8k coasted up the last buck-ten? Hmmm.
