The key to good 6 volt starting is good clean, tight, connections, and at least 00 gauge battery cables

Way too slow cranking speed. You should hear as many as six starter beats per second from a 6 volt battery/starter combination on a 6 cylinder engine. You're wearing shorts for heaven's sake! Get a good 6 volt battery and get your starter looked at and all the electrical contacts between the battery and the starter. If they're burned, you'll get lousy cranking. And yes, make sure you have good double aught cables. 6 volt starters operate at a higher current than 12 volt ones do
