Royal Albert Hall, 1976: A unique concert with Leonard Bernstein as the conductor and the Piano Master, performing George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.
Part 1:

Leonard Bernstein is one of the best and most famous composers, conductors and musicians of the world, ever.

The innovative music, which he composed for the immense popular film "West Side Story" must be one of the reasons, at least for the beginning of an unique development in and for the history of music, and for the name Leonard Bernstein.
We will never forget him.
He lived from August 25, 1918 till October 14, 1990.
His passing away is a loss for the world.
His music is eternal.

  • An absolute triumph for Bernstein. Undoubtfully, the undisputable Gershwin found his Voice in this truly wonderful rendition. Bravo. As Copland exemplified Americana, Gershwin took it a step further with a piece that has not been equalled in American music. Thank you as well.

PS. I love the fact that, like many of us , these classical tunes were exposed to me first thru cartoons and commericals! --this one United Airlines and Tom & Jerry.

  • @cathymde Thank you for your for Bernstein and Gershwin so honorable and respecting words! Very well written, from the heart, the only place where we hear and listen as it should be.

  • To the 5 people who disliked this video - you do understand that this was a Command Performance for the Queen of England. In closing I submit to you that there is a portion of your souls that is in desperate need of some TLC.

  • @neonvincent1 There are always people who like it to dislike. Not realizing that they just can click for another video, one they might really like. I do not even believe they listened the entire video. What they need, you say, is TLC, I searched in wiki for it because I did not know TLC (Tender Love Care, The Learning Center for the Deaf, and more) I believe they need many reincarnations before they are sensitive/perceptive enough for this music. Their level is not high enough now.

  • Thanks again for posting this! My 19 year old self was sitting there having a wonderful time on holiday, and now 35 years later I get to hear it again. Kind of makes my hair stand on end.

  • @monstermuse You were a lucky one, you are a lucky one, and we, youtubers, are also lucky to be able to listen and watch time after time again, and be there, in a way. But the extra dimension you were in, in >the reality< and the power of the "now" of 35 years ago, that is ...... beyond any imagination.

Thank you for sharing with us your memory, your experiences of your being there.

  • INCREDIBLE!!!! This is a performance from the inside, the un-improvised improvisation which is what the Rhapsody in Blue really is. Classic Gershwin!

Bravo LB - you had it all!

  • A part of the conducting is made by great inspiration without using the conventional movements of the conductor. I love it

  • @cathymde Also yes this is probably the greatest classical piece of music that will ever surface out of America

  • @cathymde I'm only 17 and I have extreme appreciation for this.

P.S. I was exposed to this through cartoon as well, Fantasy 2000

  • absolutely great ! :)) bernstein just keeps the real rhapsody in blue, even with this little kind of jazz, but it still is the original rhapsody. and in comparison to other people who played this song, he took it as something special and didn't play it just with technique, but with great feeling :))

fascinating work of gershwin and bernstein :)

(sorry my english is not that good :DD)

  • So *lovingly* performed and conducted...entire orchestra getting ready at 3:05...thank you thank you...I never get tired of watching this performance!

  • EXCELENTE
