Settled in and prepared for a long ride from Erzurum to Kars, I snapped off a fast photo of an old bridge. Seconds later, driver, Nuri, braked to a stop. Poor Cobandede Arc Bridge had stood spanning the Aras River for 700 years before the Turkish Government decided to renovate.

Well! In the process, they managed to collapse one of the arches. Oy Vey...that was not one of their finest moments.

Stop Number Two to stretch legs along a gulch lined with chunks of Obsidian stone. Just call it volcanic glass. Sharp as the dickens and Stone Age cultures were smart enough to produce sharp blades and arrowheads out of these rocks. Later cultures polished Obsidian to create early mirrors while we "modern day" individuals create jewelry from rocks. Duh.... Is there something wrong with this picture?
