I think, contrary to mainstream views, I see this hymn as very notable for the fact that it ties in mainstream patriotism to a country (in this case, Britain) and a very accurate and non-Americanised view of a Christian's view of patriotism in relation to heavenly citizenship and loyalty..which always comes first and foremost and contrasting how its ways are ways of PEACE and GENTLENESS... something you certainly don't hear in American patriot songs even if they do mention God or "Our King".

I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above, Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love; The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; The love that never falters, the love that pays the price, The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice. And there's another country, I've heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.

  • both of my children were born in England when I lived there............what a wonderful country! Their sense of national pride is outstanding. God Save Queen ELizabeth II who has reigned unfailingly most of her life! If only all leaders could be as loyal!

  • Long Live Mighty England, And All of Her Allies Like The United States!!!!

  • Not only do I appreciate this beautiful anthem, but I also like your comments about criteria for which to judge patriotic music. Often in American patriotic music, the best verses are not the first, and are little sung or known. I think this song has been well preserved, in that efforts to shorten it did not leave off the final verse with that powerful message.

  • Wonderful this makes me proud to be British and a good christian, thank you for posting this beautiful tribute.

  • I LOVE U MY MIGHTY ENGLAND

  • This should be our anthem! eng ger land!

  • So beautiful and chilling, the very best of Christianity and the West.

  • Well said, my friend, couldn't agree with you more. So many don't seem to go beyond the first verse.

  • A beautiful contribution Bengermino and I agree so wholeheartedly with your comments re. Christian patriotism and heavenly citizenship and loyalty. Thank you.

  • thank you for uploading this
