A local restaurant called The Rock Cafe called and wanted our station to promo free WiFi access for their customers. I had already been experimenting with some neat effects in Avid, and I desperately wanted the chance to use them when this project came along. I'm calling this a loving tribute so as to avoid legal problems, but fans of Kubrick's 2001 will note that my version of HAL is much more animated than his. Some might say I was overzealous, but I'd like to think I was merely accounting for how nutty HAL would be after all this time... It gets lonely in space.

TECH NOTES:
The opening scene is three simple .PSD transparencies moving at different rates to give that classic look of animated Disney depth. HAL's faceplate was an Adobe PhotoShop composite adapted from a desktop wallpaper jpeg. The exagerated voice flux animation was a vocalization from Windows Media Player that I filmed and brought into Avid for effects work (including a kaleidoscope, iris, and motion-blur). HAL was voiced by myself, and I put a little Flange effect on it to tin it up a bit.

  • nice work mate.

Although im not sure why you did this in avid. Having used all 4 of the editing apps and a few other things (after effects, 3DsMAX, etc,,,), this is what after effects is for.

  • What can I say? I just like doing things the hard way! Five years ago, I would've built models from old coffe machines.

Honestly, you're right. Trouble is, I know as much about after effects as I know about women. Not a lot, in practice.

  • I rated it 5 stars. The Rock has some crappy ass food. You should have used that song with the moneys banging on crap, but did it to the sounds of people throwing up. Da na na na na, blea bowuwn, uhhhgf, gaaackk.

  • The crappy food was Reason No. 543 why I chose to plug their WiFi and not their Americano Authentico.

  • That shit was almost as good as floam. Floam is a revolutionary way of integrating disasterous outcomes in funny ways. I SPELLED disasterous wrong?

  • Probably. But I'm no expert on disaster. Oh, wait. Nevermind. Some douche rated this one star. I will find and kill them.

  • Thank you, Dave, for your honesty... I must apologize if my emotion circuits were running hot that day... I have noted your criticism, and will do everything in my ability to ensure that this little problem does not impact the mission any further.

  • Stop spreading false rumors of me, for that is something I cannot allow.

  • That's creepy!

  • computers doesnt feal emotions how can hal been afraid if he doesnt have emotions

  • its a computer not a person

  • "Open the pod bay doors Hal!" "I'm afraid I can't do that Dave"

  • lol, that was great! HAL rocks :D

  • Tssskkk! Dont spoil your computer!

  • The Rock cafe is no more. The Rock itself can still be found though. The Italians call it "La Maddalena". It's an island off the northeastern tip of Sardegna (Sardinia), and I'm sure they'd be very glad for your business. Since the Navy left, I imagine it's quite barren. And cheap,

  • That was almost perfect impersonation of HAL. needed more robotic effects though. not monotone enough.

  • LOL I want to go to this rock cafe... where is it?
