The rock crab (Cancer irroratus) was first found in Icelandic waters in 2006. The scuba diver Pálmi Dungal found the first speciment in Hvalfjörður SW-Iceland. Since then the species has been found on several locations along the SW and W coast of Iceland. Before the colonization the species was only known to occur on the east coast of North America, from Labrador to South Carolina.
The study of the rock crab in Icelandic waters was initiated in 2007 and has since then been lead by Jörundur Svavarsson, professor in marine biology at the University of Iceland.
