Instinct must drive cats to do this because it's universal. I wonder if cats think it will attract birds to them? Maybe it worked thousands of years ago when cats had to hunt for their food. Now, with domesticated cats and cat food, evolution may catch up and cats will lose this trait, entertaining as it is to the rest of us.
