CHILDREN AT RISK embarked on a new and exciting project in September of 2006. After researching the elements that make a successful youth leadership program, we decided that Project LEAD (Learning, Educating, Applying, Demonstrating) would be an innovative program that integrated college awareness, social awareness, leadership & media technology skills to empower students to enact change at a school & community level. With the help of Project GRAD, CHILDREN AT RISK recruited 25 Houston-area high school students from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
The goals of Project LEAD are to:

Build leaders and advocates for at-risk communities
Develop a generation of socially aware
students
Enact change in the lives of at-risk youth and their communities
Increase college awareness in at-risk &
minority populations
Empower youth with media technology skills
and encourage its use to heighten social
awareness
Students in Project LEAD learn about social justice issues and advocacy, while sharing this information with members of the community by way of monthly television shows. They are responsible for creating and planning a Social Awareness Project for their community or school to heighten awareness about pressing children's issues. Their input will grant CHILDREN AT RISK an insider perspective on children's issues ultimately enhancing our research and advocacy efforts.

Thanks to our generous partners for supporting our Project LEAD initiative - El Paso Energy, the University of St. Thomas, Houston MediaSource, and the Kiwanis Foundation.
