This is the first beta release of the first Mario Kart 64 custom track. RTFM. Download at https://sites.google.com/site/rekcahrepyh/

This was made entirely using a hex editor, emulators with debuggers, and tools I wrote in C++. I'm working on an editor, don't hold your breath though, it won't be easy.

You'll have to excuse the fact that this video looks and sounds like utter shit. Recording games on Linux is a MASSIVE pain. I ended up having to use one program to record the video, and plug the computer's audio out into another computer to have to record the audio, because none of the programs designed to record audio output would work. And that was after trying about 8 different recorders to find one that worked, and then spending an hour or two playing with switches and sliders to get the volume controls to cooperate to capture the audio, and then I got to play with two different encoders to try to smash them together. Between having to record at a stupidly low resolution for the game to run at a decent speed, and Youtube re-encoding the video, and the severe sound quality loss you get with an analog connection through cheap sound cards... Arghfghgjhgdkjsfdsgpoopcakes.
The subtitles also lose sync because the game is not running quite at full speed due to the overhead of the video recorder running in the background. They work fine if your machine can manage to keep the game running at full speed.

This song is My Only Star by Susan Bell. Yes, again, because that's the actual "in-game" music, although it's not actually *in* the game yet. (But a hack is provided so you can fake it. :-p)

  • I bet tiohector78 just said "Someone make a Mario Kart 64 Editor already goddammit!" Maybe, someone out there can make a Mario Kart 64 Editor.

  • @JohnnyP625 Maybe someone has been slowly working away at one for a while now, but it's difficult and other things like school get in the way. :-p

  • that map seems a bit too hard for me... i can't even see the track much! i keep thinking "ok, it's going straight, right?" right before you take a turn, and the other way around.

  • You know, I was watching this again and I realized you're right, these textures don't work at all... sitting in front of the PC I can see them fine but from the couch they're practically invisible. O.o Strange...

Someday I intend to remake this hack with less fail and better textures. I'll have to make sure to do the couch test.

and yes the link is dead :(

  • I PASSED!!! =D

  • maybe you can make a track importer that imports obj files like frauber's super mario 64 editor. someone could make a track withgoogle sketchup, export it with the obj export plugin, and import the obj file into an expanded version of the game.

  • Song fits xD

  • It was only used in Japan, but there's no reason it couldn't connect to a PC anywhere else.

PSP's N64 emulation is a little lacking for this sort of thing, but it can be done, I don't think they'll be putting multiplayer into it until the games work better though.

  • would be truely epic, doenst the network only works in japan ? you had to create an kind of network,,,,btw whats about play mk64 multi player via emu on the psp....just thiough about it while fixing on the psp....

so i got an 64dd but cant even connect to pc , dunno, just a pitty that its so less developed, only a bit in japan.........

mmh but first they have to be easy to use track creator f.e.....hope u will work on that partner!!,

    greetz from germany

  • you forgot to get rid of the chain chomps
