A performance of "And I Am Telling You" by the ORIGINAL Effie, Ms. Jennifer Holliday. She blows away almost anyone else in modern times with this performance, securing herself a rightful place amongst this era's greats (Aretha, Whitney, Ella, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Mahalia Jackson).

From the 1982 Tony Awards, where she won the award for Best Actress for her creation and portrayal of Effie in the then-breakout smash musical "Dreamgirls." The scene and preceding song lead up to "And I Am Telling You," which begins at around 3.25, but the whole scene is an invaluable look at what Jennifer Holliday was really made of (And she's only 21 here?!?)

And to think she performed this EVERY night for TWO YEARS straight... Wow. Let's see Whitney, Christina, Mariah, or anyone else do that!

  • I've heard many versions of this song, but nobody does like Jennifer Holiday...no comparison!

  • Holy shit. She just ripped it for 8 min straight. I'll bet 95% of that torso is pure lung.

  • jennifer hud doesn't even do it in this key lol. jennifer holiday had a higher range

  • 6:20 to 6:46 just get goosebumps the build up the music gets. the music fades and all you hear is her voice it really gets to you the emotion she poured in to this song is second to no one in music

  • Amazing!

  • i dont think enough credit goes to whomever wrote this song. this has to be one of the best songs written ever, among one of the best vocal performances ever sung as well

  • no comparison

  • @bookthief15 You cannot compare Jennifer Hudson's performance with this. Not only did Holiday set the bar as the original but she sung and acted this scene out, LIVE, 8x a week and left the audience stunned, emotional and standing and begging for more every single time. Hudson's version of the song was pre-recorded (with multiple retakes) and she probably had several retakes during the movie film recording.

  • @spacesplaces Jennifer Hudson did a pretty good one. I think she is the closest to Holiday if there is one

  • Holy shit. To think younger kids only know Beyonce and Gaga. What are today's sorry excuses for singers compared to Holliday?
