Jay Bennett's musical, technical genius took Wilco to its creative summit. He was to Wilco what Brian Wilson was to the Beach Boys. And after Bennett left Wilco, Jeff Tweedy guided his Bennett-less band back down the mountain, into the safe, nostalgic foothills of Americana rock. I always missed the sonic depth and rich arrangements Bennett brought to the band. I will miss them even more now.

  • yeah bennett really was the best part of that band

  • have you listened to A Ghost Is Born?? jay was great, but don't discredit the entire band.

  • i do agree - jay was the heart of Wilco. r i p

  • @dos4gw82 Or the laziest. But, as George Martin said, "Horses for courses."

  • WILCO night tonight on the old laptop. Jay Bennett was the man. Who else could make a banjo sound cool?

  • I think it's extremely daring. "Experimental" does not automatically mean daring, and "not experimental" certainly doesn't mean safe. In case you haven't noticed, true Rock and Roll albums aren't exactly tearing up the charts these days. In SBS and WTA, Wilco stepped back and let the songs stand for themselves in a beautifully honest way. I think it's the bravest thing that they could have done.

  • @dos4gw82 - It's very safe music these days. It's still good, but not as daring. I'm sure you can hear that - I mean, compare "Hate it Here" or "One Wing" - both great songs - to "Wishful Thinking" or "Poor Places." The difference is night and day.

  • "A Ghost Is Born" indeed.

  • Sad the guy died, but that doesn't immediately make him the main reason for the success of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (I'm guessing that what you call the "creative summit.") He did contribute a lot, but I'm sure Tweedy, the rest of the band, and Jim O'Rourke brought just as much to the table. Besides, A Ghost is Born is pretty solid proof that Bennett wasn't the only technical genius of the group. And Wilco was ALWAYS about Americana rock, even on YHF. And how exactly is it "safe" in these days?

  • Wilco was never the same since his departure/dismissal. Nels Cline is a great talent, but he could never fill the void that Wilco carries to this day. Thanks Jay and R.I.P
