There is a simple reason why swords are in river beds. Man gets killed in combat, you don't have the logistical abillity to drag his sword back home, but you sure as hell dont' want your enemy to equip themselves with your swords. Throw it into a river. You don't have to burden yourself with the extra blade and your enemy is denied it's use.

It really is too bad that the sword went out with such a whimper. I still prefer the sword to the axe.
